Weather Update / Heatwave Alert: Odisha May Sizzle at Over 47°C Till June 14 Despite Kerala Monsoon Onset, Warn Weather Models| Exclusive

Key Points
Bhubaneswar: Even as the southwest monsoon made its official onset over Kerala on Thursday, offering hope of seasonal relief across India, Odisha and much of eastern India continue to reel under intense heat.
The latest temperature observations at 2:30 PM painted a worrying picture, with Sambalpur recording 42°C, Dhenkanal 40°C, Bhubaneswar 39.4°C, and Chandbali 39°C. However, weather models suggest these readings could be merely a precursor to a far more severe heatwave event.
Exclusive analysis of high-resolution forecast outputs from the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) and the India Meteorological Department's Global Forecast System (IMD-GFS) indicates that a powerful and persistent heat dome is likely to tighten its grip over eastern India during the coming days, driving temperatures to unbelievably dangerous levels and potentially pushing parts of Odisha into the 45 °C range through mid-June.
Despite the monsoon's advance into Kerala, forecast models show little immediate impact on Odisha. Instead, the state is expected to remain trapped under a dominant hot-air mass. The result could be one of the most prolonged and intense heat episodes of the season, placing millions under severe thermal stress.
Odisha in the Eye of the Heatwave?
Among all affected regions, Odisha appears set to bear the brunt of the extreme weather episode.
According to the latest deterministic and ensemble model projections, maximum temperatures across several parts of the state could soar between over 45°C, placing Odisha among the hottest regions in the country over the next several days.
Forecast charts generated by the IMD-GFS model indicate widespread heat stress across both coastal and interior districts. The most severe conditions are expected over western and interior Odisha, including districts such as Bolangir, Sambalpur, Titlagarh, Boudh and Sonepur, where temperatures could approach the upper end of the forecast range.
What is raising concern among forecasters is the persistence of the event. NCMRWF ensemble guidance suggests the heat anomaly is likely to remain firmly entrenched through June 11, with elevated temperatures potentially continuing until June 14, leaving little room for meaningful relief.
Coastal Odisha may face a different but equally dangerous threat.

✨While temperatures in cities such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Paradip may remain slightly lower than interior hotspots, high humidity levels are expected to push the heat index significantly higher, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Heatwave Expands Across Eastern and Central India
The forecast signals that Odisha is not alone.
Model projections show a broad heatwave belt extending across Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand, where daytime temperatures are expected to remain in the 43°C to 45°C range for several consecutive days.
Further west, large parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are also likely to witness persistent heat stress, with temperatures repeatedly crossing 42°C.
The impact could extend into sections of Uttar Pradesh and the Indo-Gangetic plains, where above-normal temperatures are forecast to continue despite the onset of monsoon activity in southern India.
Health and Safety Concerns Rise
With the heatwave expected to persist for more than a week, authorities may need to intensify heat-action measures, particularly for outdoor workers, children, senior citizens and vulnerable populations.
Meteorologists caution that prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, especially when combined with high humidity, can significantly increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
As Odisha
stares at over 45°C weather event, all eyes will now be on whether
advancing monsoon currents can break the grip of what forecast models are
increasingly portraying as one of the most severe heat episodes of the year.
