Argus News - Woman Attempts Self-Immolation Over Harassment By Boyfriend, Succumbs

Ganjam, Apr 2: A tragic incident has been reported from Aska Kotinada police station limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district, where a young woman succumbed to burn injuries late Wednesday night after an alleged suicide attempt.

The victim, identified as resident of Betanai village, had reportedly poured kerosene over herself and set herself ablaze a few days ago.

Family members rushed to her aid and initially admitted her to Aska Medical College. Later, she was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where she remained under critical care. Despite efforts by doctors, she passed away while undergoing treatment.

According to reports, the act was driven by emotional distress linked to a love affair.

While the exact cause behind the victim's extreme step was not known immediately, relatives of the victim levelled serious allegations against her boyfriend, claiming that their daughter was deceived into a physical relationship and later blackmailed.

They alleged that obscene photographs of her were taken and used to threaten her for a prolonged period. The accused and his associate allegedly pressured her by threatening to make the images viral, which caused immense psychological trauma. Unable to bear the harassment, she attempted self-immolation.

Following the incident, police have arrested one of the accused and initiated further investigation. Further updates awaited as investigation is underway.
