Paradip, Feb 22: A massive fire broke out at the main vegetable market in Badapadia, Paradip, late last night, reducing more than 50 shops to ashes.

According to reports, the blaze erupted at around 2 a.m., engulfing the temporary bamboo-and-palm structures that housed the vendors.

On being informed, firefighters rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after hours of effort.

While the cause of the fire remains unclear, preliminary reports suggest it may have been triggered by a mosquito coil or an electrical short circuit.

The inferno destroyed cash, vegetables, computers, and even a motorcycle stored inside the shops.

Local traders, who have long relied on this market as the central hub for daily business, were devastated as their livelihoods went up in smoke.

The Paradip Port authorities had earlier provided temporary sheds for vendors, but the market has remained vulnerable due to its makeshift construction.

Traders and the local merchants’ association have repeatedly demanded the establishment of a permanent vending zone to prevent such disasters.

A similar fire had previously destroyed four shops, underscoring the urgent need for safer infrastructure.
