Medical Milestone / MKCG MCH Achieves Milestone With First-Ever Open-Heart Bypass Surgery In CTVS Department

Key Points
Berhampur, Dec 6: MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur has achieved a historic milestone by successfully conducting its first-ever open-heart bypass surgery in the Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) department.
The surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr. Sarada Prasanna Sahu, Head of the CTVS department, along with a team of doctors, anesthetists, and nursing staff.
The patient, Shantilata Nayak from Kanchuru village in Ganjam district, had been admitted to the cardiology department after experiencing severe chest pain. Tests revealed a blockage in one of the three arteries of her heart. Since stent placement was not feasible, she was referred to the CTVS department for bypass surgery.
Given the risk of heart attack due to impaired blood
circulation, doctors decided to perform an open-heart bypass while the heart
was still functioning. The complex procedure was carried out successfully, and
Shantilata is now recovering steadily in the ICU.
