Kandhamal, Apr 5: Forest department officials in Kandhamal district have detained a man for possessing a leopard skin in the Chakapad Brahmanapada area of Tikabali forest range.

The accused, identified as Pankaj Kahara of Ringibadi village under Chakapad police station, was caught with a bag containing the leopard skin and a mobile phone, which have been seized.

According to information provided by the Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF), Phulbani, the incident which took place on May 15 last year, a leopard had reportedly entered Pankaj’s cowshed and killed one of his cattle.

In retaliation, Pankaj allegedly decided to eliminate the animal. The following day, he placed poisoned meat inside the cowshed. The tiger returned, consumed the poisoned bait, and died a short distance away from the cowshed.

Subsequently, one of Pankaj’s relatives is said to have removed the tiger’s skin and buried the remaining flesh and bones in the nearby protected forest area.

The matter came to light after information about the incident spread locally, prompting forest officials to launch an investigation.

Acting on the tip-off, they detained Pankaj with the tiger skin in his possession.

The forest department has initiated further inquiry into the case, which involves serious violations of wildlife protection laws. Killing a tiger, a Schedule I species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, is a grave offense that can lead to stringent punishment.

Authorities are expected to pursue legal action against those involved in the killing and illegal possession of tiger parts.
