Bhubaneswar, Nov 18: Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has been conferred with the prestigious Sir Gilbert Walker Award by the Indian Meteorological Society in recognition of his lifetime contribution to meteorological science and public service.
Widely known as the “Cyclone Man of India,” Dr. Mohapatra has played a transformative role in modernising India’s weather forecasting systems and enhancing disaster preparedness across the country.
Born on August 12, 1965, in Bhadrak district of Odisha, Dr. Mohapatra joined the IMD in 1992 and rose to become its Director General in 2019.
Under his leadership, the IMD underwent significant modernization, integrating advanced technologies to improve accuracy and outreach.
His 2007 report on upgrading India’s warning systems was accepted and approved by the central government, leading to a nationwide overhaul of meteorological infrastructure.
Dr. Mohapatra’s contributions extend beyond India. His work has benefited 13 neighboring countries in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea regions, providing timely and accurate forecasts that have saved countless lives.
Initiatives like Mission Mausam (2024), South Asia Flash Flood Guidance (2021), and his involvement in the WMO Severe Weather Forecasting Program (2016) underscore his global impact.
