Bhubaneswar, Apr 3: Chandrasekharpur police in Bhubaneswar arrested eight individuals, including four women, who had been impersonating Crime Investigation Department (CID) officers to extort money from educational institutions and business establishments.
According to reports, the accused used to enter schools, colleges, and coaching centers under the guise of conducting inspections. They allegedly threatened management by pointing out supposed irregularities and demanded money to avoid “official action.”
Their activities were not limited to educational institutions; they also targeted prominent business establishments, posing as CID officials and coercing owners into paying large sums of money.
The group’s fraudulent activities came to light when they attempted to extort money outside a private educational institution in Chandrasekharpur.
Witnesses reported that the accused were aggressively demanding cash while claiming to be CID officers.
Acting swiftly, police arrived at the scene and apprehended all eight suspects.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Pooja Behera, Pratima Parida, Jenamani Pradhan, Saubhagya Sahu, Dharmendra Boitai, Manoj Kumar Mishra, Annapurna Panda, and Nilu Nayak. They were taken into custody and produced in court following their arrest.
Police officials stated that the accused had been operating in the capital city for some time, exploiting fear and authority to extort money.
