Cuttack, Nov 1: As Odisha gears up for the historic Baliyatra, one of its most iconic cultural celebrations, the ceremonial launch of the majestic commemorative boat 'Kalinga Tarangini' was held at Gadagadia Ghat on the banks of the Mahanadi River, marking the official countdown to the festivities.
This symbolic voyage not only pays homage to Odisha’s rich maritime legacy but also sets the tone for the upcoming festivities that celebrate the ancient trade and cultural exchanges of the Kalinga empire.
The boat, constructed by the Cuttack district administration, was unveiled by Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg. Prior to the launch, traditional rituals and puja were performed to sanctify the vessel.
The 'Kalinga Tarangini' stands as a living symbol of Baliyatra — a festival that commemorates Odisha’s ancient trade links with Southeast Asia. Built in the style of traditional Kalinga boats, the vessel reflects the craftsmanship and design heritage of Odisha’s seafaring past.

The construction of the boat took approximately one and a half months, with over 20 skilled artisans contributing to its creation. The boat’s intricate design and cultural significance have already drawn admiration from locals and visitors alike.
Following the inauguration, dignitaries including the Cuttack Collector, CMC Commissioner, and Additional District Magistrate joined Anu Garg aboard the boat for a ceremonial cruise on the Mahanadi.
