Odisha Governor, CM Invited for ‘Historic Baliyatra Cuttack 2025’

Bhubaneswar, Oct 31: Preparations are in full swing for the ‘Historic Baliyatra Cuttack 2025’, one of Asia’s largest trade fairs, held annually on the banks of the Mahanadi River in Cuttack, Odisha. The district administration has begun distributing invitations, starting with a ceremonial invite to Goddess Katakachandi, followed by formal invitations to the Governor and Chief Minister of Odisha.

Invitation to Governor and CM

On Friday, Collector and District Magistrate Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde called on Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in Bhubaneswar separately and presented invitation cards for their esteemed presence at the ‘Historic Baliyatra Cuttack 2025’.

Dates, Venue and Significance

Cuttack, the Millennium City of Odisha, will host the Historic Baliyatra Cuttack 2025 on the banks of the Mahanadi River from November 5 to November 12.

Baliyatra, meaning “Journey to Bali,” honours Odisha’s old tradition of traders sailing to distant lands in boats called Boitas from the Mahanadi River during Kartika Purnima. The festival stirs up warm memories of Odisha’s rich heritage and continues to amaze visitors.

Indonesia as Partner Nation 

Indonesia has been named as the official partner nation for the Historic Baliyatra Cuttack 2025.  The collaboration aims to celebrate the centuries-old maritime relationship between Kalinga (present-day Odisha) and the Indonesian archipelago. A dedicated pavilion at the iconic fair will showcase Indonesian handicrafts, art, and cultural heritage, highlighting the historical trade ties between Odisha and Southeast Asia.

Preparations for cultural stages and events like “Cuttack in Cuttack” and “Oramasa” are underway. In a unique initiative to promote Odia literature, the district administration has purchased 75,000 books for free distribution during the fair.

The initiative aims to reconnect the youth with Odia literature in the digital age. Visitors can receive free books and explore Odisha’s rich cultural and literary traditions, making Baliyatra not just a commercial fair but a celebration of heritage.

Cultural Events

Each evening, cultural groups from Odisha and other states will perform dances like Odissi, Chhau, Bihu, Mahari, Gotipua, Sambalpuri, and Santali folk at the fairgrounds. Around 2,500 stalls will showcase crafts, household items, and foods for visitors.
