Weightlifter Bijay Satpathy Passes Away

Berhampur, Sep 23: Legendary weightlifter and Arjuna Awardee Bijay Kumar Satpathy passed away at his residence in Berhampur around 8:40 PM on Monday. He was 71.

Satpathy, a five-time national champion, brought glory to India by winning a silver medal in the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and bronze medals at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in 1981 and 1983.


He was conferred the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1982 for his outstanding contribution to Indian sports.

Born and raised in Berhampur, Satpathy began his weightlifting journey during his school days and went on to represent both the Indian Navy and Indian Railways during his career.

He is survived by his wife Sabitarani and two sons, Jagannath and Somnath.
