Balasore, Apr 10: A woman and her son were killed after iron plates topple on them inside a truck on National Highway 16 near Simulia police station here early Friday morning.

According to reports, the tragic incident occurred when a truck carrying iron plates applied brake all of sudden, causing several plates to topple onto passengers who had boarded the vehicle.

Among the victims were Sambhari Soren and her six-year-old son, Saurabh Soren, who died instantly at the scene.  They were part of a group of seven people, including her husband Vijay Soren of Shyamsundarpur village under Nilgiri police station, who had hitched a ride on the truck from Chandikhole to return home.

The sudden brake by the driver led to the iron plates crushing those seated in the truck’s cargo area. Surviving passengers, including Vijay and his daughter, were rushed to Simulia Medical for treatment.

Police have seized the truck and detained the driver for questioning. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
