Jajpur Town, Apr 7: A 24-year-old youth died while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Tuesday after being shot by unidentified assailants in Odisha’s Jajpur district.
The deceased person was identified as Soumya Samal, a resident of Kuansarpur village in Odisha's Jajpur district.
According to our source, the incident took place late at night, around 11:30pm on Monday in Kalimegha locality under Jajpur Town police station limits, reportedly in front of the residence of former MLA Pranab Prakash Das.
As per initial reports, two miscreants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Soumya while he was sitting on an Ola EV scooter.
Severely injured and bleeding profusely, Soumya was first rushed to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital. Doctors later referred him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where he succumbed during treatment.
Our sources informed that Soumya ran a meat shop. Police are now probing his movements prior to the incident.
Police officials said, “Spent bullets were recovered from the spot, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the attack.”

1304 Murders In 2025
A white paper released by the state Home Department last month presented a detailed overview of the law and order situation in Odisha, recording 2,29,881 cognisable offences in 2025.
Over 2.29 Lakh Cognisable Offences Registered
A total of 2,29,881 cognisable offences were recorded across the state during 2025.
These included 1,304 cases of murder, 353 cases of dacoity, 1,802 cases of robbery and 6,282 burglary cases. Authorities also registered 6,053 cheating cases and 1,095 incidents of rioting, the report said.
