Sambalpur, Dec 27: A tragic accident occurred early Saturday morning on National Highway-55 near Jujumura in Sambalpur district, when a tourist vehicle carrying 17 family members from Bhubaneswar crashed into a roadside culvert.
According to reports, a group of people was en route to Sambalpur to offer prayers at Maa Samaleswari temple when the driver of the vehicle lost control over the wheels and rammed into the culvert at around 6:00 am.
Sources said that the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off and collide with the roadside culvert.

Following the incident, around 15 passengers sustained
injuries. While wight critically injured persons were rushed to Burla VIMSAR
hospital, seven others are being treated at Sambalpur District
Headquarters Hospital.

Soon after the incident, police rushed to the scene and initiated an investigation into the incident. The accident has raised concerns about driver fatigue and road safety on busy national highways, especially during long-distance pilgrim journeys.
