Key Points

Odisha continues to battle an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 40°C. In response, the administrations of Sundargarh and Balangir districts have extended school holidays to protect students from the scorching conditions. All schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers will remain closed until April 27, ensuring safety amid the relentless summer heat.
Sundargarh Apr 22: Odisha is reeling under an intense heatwave, forcing district administrations to extend school holidays for the safety of students. With temperatures soaring above 40°C, stepping outside even in the morning hours has become unbearable. In response, authorities in Sundargarh and Balangir districts have announced extended closures of schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centers.

In Sundargarh, the District Education Officer has directed that all government and private schools remain closed from April 23 to April 27. This five-day holiday applies to classes from primary to higher secondary levels. Official notices have been issued to block education officers and headmasters, ensuring that the directive is implemented across the district. The decision comes as the heatwave has made it nearly impossible for children to attend classes safely.

Meanwhile, in Balangir, the district administration has extended the closure of schools, Anganwadi centers, and colleges until April 25. Earlier, institutions were shut until April 21 due to the rising temperatures, but with the heatwave showing no signs of relief, the holidays have now been prolonged by four more days. The District Collector emphasized that student health and safety remain the top priority, and the extension was necessary to protect children from the severe conditions.

Parents and guardians have welcomed the move, noting that the scorching heat has made daily routines extremely difficult. Many expressed relief that the administration has taken proactive steps to safeguard children, especially as the afternoons have become dangerously hot.

While the closures provide immediate protection, they may also disrupt academic schedules, including examinations and planned lessons. School authorities are expected to adjust timetables once classes resume. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that students stay indoors, hydrated, and safe from the extreme weather.

In summary, Sundargarh and Balangir districts have taken decisive action by extending school holidays in the face of relentless heat. The move highlights the growing impact of climate extremes on education and daily life, underscoring the importance of prioritizing health and safety during such challenging times.
