Bhubaneswar, Nov 16: Odisha is currently witnessing an alarming road accident death rate, with an average of 15 fatalities per day, according to official data.
The situation has been acknowledged as “deeply concerning” by Transport Secretary Usha Padhee, who emphasized the need for coordinated action.
India ranks first globally in road accident fatalities, and
Odisha currently stands at 13th position nationally.
Despite ongoing awareness
campaigns and enforcement efforts, the number of accidents continues to rise,
largely due to non-compliance with traffic rules, including lane discipline and
speed regulations.
The Odisha government has initiated a four-pronged strategy to curb road mishaps, focusing on:

- Education and awareness
- Emergency response improvements
Authorities have directed road-owning agencies such as PWD,
NHAI, and RD to implement engineering fixes in high-risk zones. Additionally,
efforts are underway to introduce hyper-local solutions to manage traffic
congestion and improve safety in densely populated areas.

Officials stress that reducing road fatalities requires collaborative efforts from citizens, law enforcement, infrastructure agencies, and educational institutions. The government is also working to strengthen trauma care and emergency services to reduce post-accident mortality.
The urgency of the situation has led to renewed focus on Zero Fatality Fortnights, targeted interventions, and stricter monitoring of traffic violations across the state.
