Bhubaneswar, May 24: Odisha continues to bake under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 45°C in several districts. On Sunday, nine locations in western Odisha recorded mercury levels above 44°C, while six districts crossed the 45°C threshold.
Titlagarh, often referred to as the “heat capital” of the state, registered the highest temperature at 45.8°C, followed closely by Boudh at 45.6°C, Bhawanipatna at 45.4°C, Sambalpur at 45.3°C, Sonepur at 45.2°C, and Balangir at 45°C.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the scorching conditions are expected to persist until May 28, after which Kalbaisakhi rains may bring some relief. The IMD bulletin noted that maximum daytime temperatures are unlikely to change significantly over the next 3–4 days, though a slight dip of 2–3°C may occur thereafter.
On Sunday, orange warnings were issued for Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Boudh, and Balangir districts due to severe heatwave conditions. The IMD also flagged “warm night” alerts for parts of Sambalpur and Balangir, where residents may experience unusually high nighttime temperatures.
The bulletin further indicated that while daytime heat remains unbearable, evening hours could see isolated Kalbaisakhi thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 50–60 kmph in districts such as Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, and Ganjam.
