With the heatwave showing no signs of abating, authorities have urged people to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Bhubaneswar, June 6: Odisha is reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past 40°C across most districts and humidity making conditions unbearable. Residents in Bhubaneswar experienced a heat index equivalent to nearly 50°C on Friday, despite the mercury reading 41°C. The oppressive combination of high temperature and humidity has left people struggling to cope.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave is expected to persist for the next five to six days, with little change in maximum temperatures. Sporadic Kalbaisakhi storms may bring temporary relief in some areas, but widespread rainfall is unlikely until mid-June.

On Friday, Boudh recorded the highest temperature at 41.7°C, followed closely by Sambalpur at 41.2°C, Bhubaneswar and Angul at 41.1°C, and several other districts including Jharsuguda, Balangir, Talcher, and Nayagarh touching 41°C. Coastal towns such as Chandbali and Cuttack also crossed 39°C, while Hirakud, Paralakhemundi, Titilagarh, Dhenkanal, and Khordha hovered around 40°C.

Meteorologist Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahu explained that a trough line over central India has blocked moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal, resulting in reduced humidity and a sudden spike in temperatures. He warned that the heatwave could continue until June 11, with Kalbaisakhi activity likely to increase thereafter. Light rainfall is expected around June 13–14, potentially paving the way for the monsoon’s entry into Odisha.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an orange warning for districts including Balasore, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati, cautioning residents about severe thunderstorms. Alerts have also been extended to coastal, southern, and western Odisha districts.
