Bhubaneswar, Sept 5: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday announced that his government would recruit 45,000 teachers over the next three years.

Addressing students at Secondary Board High School in Cuttack on the occasion of National Teachers’ Day, CM Majhi urged pupils not to waste time on social media and instead focus on studies and career-building. “As students, your first responsibility is to acquire good academic skills and contribute to your own and the country’s development. This is the main purpose of our education system,” he said.

The Chief Minister emphasised that education is not merely about imparting knowledge but is a profound process of shaping human beings. Paying tribute to former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary, he described the guru-shishya tradition as unique to Indian culture. He recalled how teachers had played decisive roles in shaping lives, from Lord Ram and Lord Krishna to Emperor Chandragupta Maurya and Swami Vivekananda. He also noted that Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, despite being India’s President, considered it an honour to identify himself first as a teacher.

CM Majhi, who himself was a teacher before entering politics, interacted with students and advised them to avoid distractions. “Please do not waste too much time on social media, and instead focus on building careers,” he told them.

Outlining his government’s resolve to bring comprehensive reforms in education, Majhi said Odisha is the first state in the country to introduce the ‘KG to PG’ free education scheme. He added that 2,200 world-class Godavarish Mishra Adarsh Primary Schools are being constructed at a cost of Rs12,000 crore, while 45,000 nursery schools have already been opened for pre-school children. He reiterated the government’s commitment to provide midday meals and textbooks to students of Classes IX and X, along with the Shahid Madho Singh Hath Kharcha Yojana for tribal children to reduce dropout rates.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also felicitated several teachers for their dedicated service, stressing that their role exemplifies the true spirit of education.
