Teachers’ Day 2026: President Droupadi Murmu Pays Tribute to Teachers, Calls Teaching a Sacred Vow

New Delhi, Sept 5: President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday paid rich tributes to educators across India in her Teachers’ Day message describing teaching as a sacred vow and the cornerstone of nation-building. She emphasised that teachers not only impart knowledge but also shape destinies, instilling values, skills, and motivation in generations of students.

Legacy of Great Teachers

Recalling Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s wish that his birthday be celebrated as Teachers’ Day, President Murmu highlighted his belief that teaching was the most important role of all. She also cited Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who wished to be remembered foremost as a teacher.

Ancient Traditions, Modern Relevance

The President drew upon India’s cultural heritage, noting the timeless message of “Acharyadevo Bhava” from the Taittiriya Upanishad. She stressed that teachers should treat students with love, fairness, and patience, guiding them according to their ability to learn. Quoting Kalidasa, she said a good teacher must possess profound knowledge and the ability to transmit it effectively.

Personal Reflections

Murmu shared her own experiences as a student and teacher, recalling the encouragement she received from mentors and her time teaching at Sri Aurobindo Integral School in Rairangpur. She described the joy of preparing children for cultural events, sports, and picnics, and noted that teachers too learn from the spontaneity and curiosity of children.

Role in Nation-Building

Highlighting her efforts to establish a residential school for disadvantaged children, Murmu underscored the broader responsibility of teachers in shaping ethical, compassionate, and capable citizens. She urged educators to inspire students to value cultural heritage, adopt a scientific outlook, protect the environment, and uphold the spirit of “Nation First.”
