Argus News - Migratory Bird With Unidentified Tag Spotted At Rushikulya Coast

Rushikulya, Nov 27: The serene Rushikulya river mouth in Odisha, celebrated worldwide as a nesting ground for Olive Ridley turtles, has now drawn the attention of researchers for another rare sighting.

A migratory bird carrying an unidentified tag was spotted along the coast in Ganjam district.

The bird has been identified as belonging to the Sand Plover species, which migrates from distant regions such as Europe and North America during the winter season.

The tag attached to its leg is typically used by researchers to track the movement and migratory patterns of such birds.

Speaking about the significance of the sighting, a senior official explained that these tags help scientists understand the habitats chosen by migratory birds under extreme conditions. He added that such observations contribute valuable data to ongoing research on global bird migration.

Last year, a Siberian Plover was spotted in the same region, while this year’s sighting has been identified as a Greater Plover.
