Malkangiri, Feb 4: A senior Maoist leader from Chhattisgarh has surrendered before police in Malkangiri district. Sukhram Markam, an Area Committee Member of the Maoist organization, gave up arms after years of involvement in extremist activities.

During the surrender, Markam handed over an SLR rifle, 12 live rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) weighing 2 kg each, 10 meters of Kardex wire, along with a large cache of Maoist materials.

Police sources confirmed that Markam had been associated with the Maoist Organization since 2010 and was actively involved in several violent incidents across both Malkangiri in Odisha and neighbouring Chhattisgarh. His surrender is seen as a major setback to Maoist operations in the region and a step forward in restoring peace and stability.

Authorities have welcomed the move, emphasizing that the government remains committed to rehabilitation and reintegration of surrendered cadres into mainstream society.
