Major Robbery Attempt Foiled, 'MAHAKAL' Gang Arrested In Mayurbhanj

Mayurbhanj, Oct 11: In a swift and strategic operation, police in Mayurbhanj successfully thwarted a major robbery attempt with the arrest of 10 members of 'MAHAKAL' gang.

Acting on credible intelligence, a police team launched a covert operation to thwart a planned bank robbery. During the mission, officers grew suspicious and intercepted a group of individuals allegedly plotting the heist. Upon confrontation, the suspects opened fire on the police team. However, the officers acted swiftly and managed to overpower and apprehend all the accused.

The arrested persons include prime accused Ganesh Giri, a resident of Ghagarbeda, Mayurbhanj. He was arrested along with nine associates.

The police team also seized five 7.65 mm pistols, seven magazines, 25 live rounds, and several other weapons.

During the investigation, police identified the group as the notorious 'Mahakal' gang. A deeper investigation into their criminal history revealed an extensive rap sheet, linking them to a range of serious offenses including illegal sand mining, cattle theft, arms trafficking, dacoity, robbery, extortion, and even contract killings.

Authorities also confirmed that the gang was under watch following intelligence inputs about their movements and criminal history.

Reportedly, a case no. 780/2025 (Dt. 10.10.2025) under Sections 310(4)/310(5)/109(1) BNS, 2023 r/w Sec. 25/27 Arms Act, 1958, has been registered and the accused person are currently taken into custody.
