Low-Pressure Area Over Malacca Strait; Andaman & Nicobar Brace For Stormy Weather

Key Points

While meteorologists are monitoring the system closely, there is uncertainty about whether it will intensify into a cyclonic storm.
Bhubaneswar, Nov 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has informed the low-pressure area formed over the Malacca Strait and adjoining South Andaman Sea might intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 24, with further strengthening possible over the southwest Bay of Bengal within the following 48 hours.

According to IMD officials, the system developed under the influence of a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. As the depression moves west-northwestwards, it may bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several regions, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Rayalaseema, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands between November 22 and 27.

While meteorologists are monitoring the system closely, there is uncertainty about whether it will intensify into a cyclonic storm. Different weather models have projected varying trajectories and intensities, leaving room for multiple scenarios.

Meteorological observations also indicated two cyclonic circulations over the southeast Arabian Sea and the Comorin–equatorial region.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as the evolving system may influence weather conditions across parts of the Indian Ocean region in the coming days.

The IMD has also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall measuring 7–20 cm at one or two places in the Nicobar Islands, while the Andaman Islands are likely to receive heavy rainfall of 7–11 cm.

Authorities have also cautioned that sea conditions around the region are expected to remain rough, and fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the deep sea during this period.
