Bhubaneswar, Oct 9: In a rare and unfortunate incident, the sacred flag atop the iconic Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar was reportedly burnt following a lightning strike late last night.

The strike also damaged several CCTV cameras installed around the temple premises, along with a mercury bulb used for illumination.

Temple authorities and local devotees expressed concern over the damage to the revered structure, which holds immense spiritual and cultural significance in Odisha.

The flag, considered sacred and symbolic of divine protection, was found charred early this morning.

Security personnel and temple staff are assessing the extent of the damage.

Preliminary reports suggest that the lightning strike occurred during a brief spell of thunderstorms in the city.

Restoration efforts are expected to begin soon, with the temple administration coordinating with local officials to ensure swift recovery.
