Cuttack, Jan 12: Panic gripped residents of Imam Nagar in Cuttack’s Jagatpur area after a wild animal resembling a leopard was sighted moving through the locality late Sunday night, a source said.

The incident has triggered fear among residents, many of whom have stopped stepping out of their homes.

According to locals, the animal was spotted roaming the area during the night hours, and its movement was captured on nearby CCTV cameras. The footage, now circulating among residents, shows a big cat-like animal moving cautiously through residential lanes.

Paw Marks Found; Forest Team Begins Probe
Residents also claimed to have identified paw marks in and around the locality, strengthening suspicions that the animal could be a leopard. Following the sighting, the Forest Department was informed.

A forest department team has since reached the area and begun an investigation to verify the nature of the animal and assess the situation. Officials are examining CCTV footage and physical evidence from the site. Residents have been advised to remain cautious until the inquiry is completed.

Forest officials have not yet confirmed the species of the animal sighted.

Odisha’s Leopard Population
The incident comes amid growing awareness of wildlife movement in the state. Odisha is home to an estimated 680 to 724 leopards, along with 30 tigers and eight cubs, as of December, 2025.
