Cuttack, Jan 12: A car accident narrowly avoided turning fatal after a vehicle lost control in dense fog and plunged into the Pattamundai Canal near Lekhanpur Bazar in Salepur area of Cuttack district late on Sunday night, a source said.
According to preliminary information, the driver was travelling from Lalitagiri towards Bhubaneswar when poor visibility caused by thick fog led the car to skid off the road and overturn into the canal. Local residents who noticed the accident rushed to the spot and managed to rescue the driver safely before emergency services arrived.
The vehicle involved, identified as a Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, was partially submerged in the canal. No serious injuries were reported, the source said.
Upon receiving information, officers from the Japkud police outpost reached the scene. The incident is being investigated by outpost officer Bhisma Charan Pradhan, police sources said, adding that further details regarding the exact cause of the accident are being examined.
The incident comes close on the heels of a recent fatal accident involving a car that plunged into the Birupa River last month, highlighting safety concerns during foggy winter nights.
On December 3, 2025, a car veered off the road and fell into the Birupa River, following which one occupant was rescued by local residents. However, the driver, identified as Udit Sahoo, a resident of Lingipur in Bhubaneswar, went missing. Rescue teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and Fire Services conducted overnight search operations.
The submerged vehicle was later retrieved along with Sahoo’s mobile phone. His body was recovered from the river on the morning of December 4 by ODRAF divers, bringing the operation to an end.
