Bhubaneswar, Apr 18: Odisha is reeling under extreme weather conditions as western parts of the state continue to burn under an intense heatwave, while coastal districts brace for thunderstorms and rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple yellow warnings, highlighting the dual challenges faced by the state.

According to the IMD, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Balangir, and Kalahandi districts are currently under severe heatwave conditions. Temperatures in these regions have soared, with daytime heat becoming unbearable.

The department has cautioned residents to take preventive measures against heat-related illnesses.

Meanwhile, 11 coastal districts have been placed under a yellow warning for hot and humid weather. These include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada, and Koraput.

In addition, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Malkangiri districts are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall.

The IMD has predicted that the heatwave will persist for at least four more days, until April 20, with no immediate relief expected until April 23.

In the next 24 hours, daytime temperatures are likely to rise by another 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, potentially touching 45°C in several parts of the state, said the weather agency.

Authorities have urged people to stay indoors during peak hours, remain hydrated, and avoid exposure to direct sunlight.

With temperatures climbing dangerously high, the state remains on alert for both heat-related health risks and sudden weather changes.
