Heatwave alert Issued across Odisha, Temp Likely to Touch 40°C

Titilagarh is likely to touch 40°C, while western Odisha towns such as Balangir, Bhawanipatna, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Angul, Bargarh, and Nuapada may hover close to 40°C by March 12.
Bhubaneswar, Mar 9: Several places across Odisha are expected to witness a sharp rise in daytime temperatures, with an increase of 2-3°C across many districts in the next three days.

According to reports, Titilagarh is likely to touch 40°C, while western Odisha towns such as Balangir, Bhawanipatna, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Angul, Bargarh, and Nuapada may hover close to 40°C by March 12. Coastal Odisha, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, is forecast to reach around 38°C.

Meanwhile, northern Odisha could experience thunderstorms and rainfall due to Kalbaishakhi activity.

On March 9, districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar may see lightning and rain, followed by similar conditions in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak on March 10. Beyond this, the next seven days are expected to remain largely dry.

Jharsuguda recorded the state’s highest temperature today at 37.6°C, followed by Titilagarh (37°C), Balangir (36.5°C), Nayagarh (36.2°C), Bhawanipatna (36.1°C), Sundargarh and Nuapada (36°C).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued warnings of heatwave-like conditions across several parts of the country over the next five days.

Vidarbha has already entered the list of regions experiencing extreme heat this March. Interior Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and north interior Karnataka have reported maximum temperatures between 37-41°C. In Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh, daytime temperatures are currently 5°C above normal.

Coastal and central Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and north Tamil Nadu are expected to remain under heatwave conditions until Monday. Gujarat and the Kutch-Saurashtra region may also experience heatwave activity between March 9 and 11.
