Kandhamal, Mar 25: In a major breakthrough for anti-insurgency efforts in Odisha, five Maoists, including a senior cadre, have surrendered before the police.

The group, led by Shukru alias Kosha Sodi, laid down arms in Kandhamal district, marking a significant step toward peace and reintegration into mainstream society.

The surrender will be formally announced today by Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania and ADG (Operations – Anti-Naxal) Sanjeeb Panda. Officials described the development as a morale boost for security forces and a sign of declining Maoist influence in the region.

Among those who surrendered are Sanjay, a party member, and three women Maoists—Banila, Kuni Majhi, and Roni. Police sources revealed that the group had been active in Kandhamal and adjoining districts, involved in mobilizing villagers and carrying out Maoist propaganda. Their decision to surrender is seen as a result of sustained police operations, community outreach programs, and rehabilitation initiatives offered by the state government.

Authorities emphasized that the surrendered cadres will be provided assistance under the state’s rehabilitation policy, which includes financial support, vocational training, and opportunities for reintegration. The move is expected to encourage more Maoists to abandon violence and return to civilian life.

The surrender highlights the growing success of Odisha’s anti-Naxal strategy, combining strong security measures with developmental initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of extremism.
