Empowering Farmers: Odisha Flags off Awareness Rath for Scientific Farming
Bhubaneswar, Nov 26: Odisha government has rolled out a month-long awareness campaign to educate farmers on scientific farming practices based on land type, water management, and soil quality.
The initiative, flagged off Wednesday from Krushi Bhavan by Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo, will travel across multiple districts under the LRI (Land Resource Inventory) Yatra programme.
The specially designed Awareness Rath will cover eight gram panchayats in Deogarh, 14 in Dhenkanal, 16 in Koraput, 19 in Nayagarh, and 22 in Sambalpur.
The campaign aims to sensitize farmers about watershed management, soil conservation, and the effective use of LRI cards. These cards, prepared using scientific land resource data, provide farmers with detailed information about soil properties, crop suitability, fertility issues, and recommended treatments. Through this initiative, farmers will learn how to make informed decisions on crop selection, fertilizer management, soil conservation, and water-saving techniques.
The Rath will also highlight the benefits of using LRI cards, with plans to felicitate farmers who have successfully improved productivity through their use.
The campaign will include multiple activities such as Bhoomi Pujan for new watershed projects, LRI festivals, Shramdaan (voluntary labour), “Pani Ki Pathshala” (water schools), and inauguration of completed works. To engage the younger generation, quiz competitions will be organized at schools across panchayats, ensuring awareness about soil and water conservation reaches future farmers.
Monitoring of the Awareness Rath’s activities will be done through the MIS mobile application, ensuring transparency and accountability. The government believes that widespread adoption of LRI cards will not only enhance crop yields but also strengthen soil and water conservation efforts, contributing to holistic development in watershed regions.
By combining scientific knowledge with grassroots awareness, the campaign seeks to empower farmers, improve agricultural sustainability, and ensure long-term prosperity for rural communities in Odisha.
