Bhubaneswar, Jan 17: Odisha Health Secretary S. Aswathy visited Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar following the recent incident of assault on a doctor. She held discussions with the hospital superintendent, PGIMER superintendent, and independent secretaries regarding the matter.
Speaking to the media persons, Aswathy assured that the government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of doctors. “We are vigilant about doctors’ protection. One person has already been arrested in connection with the incident and forwarded to court. All accused will be arrested,” she said.
She emphasised that doctors are doing commendable work and it is the administration’s responsibility to safeguard them. Coordination with the police administration is ongoing to ensure strict action against those responsible.
Officials explained that the incident occurred when a patient was brought to the hospital after OPD hours. The doctor advised the attendants to take the patient to the casualty ward, which led to an argument.
The altercation soon escalated into physical violence, during which the accused attacked doctor Janmejaya Mishra with a helmet, resulting in a fracture to his hand. A plaster technician, Ratnakar Bal, who was present at the spot, was also assaulted and sustained injuries.
Later, acting on the complaint by the doctor, Capital Police registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested the accused. He was later produced before a local court.

The Health Secretary further assured that discussions will continue with doctors to address their concerns and provide adequate security measures.
