Dharmendra Pradhan Condemns Assault On Odia Medical Student, Calls For Strict Action

Bhubaneswar, Oct 12: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has strongly condemned the alleged gang-rape of Odia medical student in Durgapur, West Bengal, calling the incident "despicable and painful."

The survivor, a second-year MBBS student, is currently undergoing medical treatment and receiving counseling support from her family.

The assault reportedly occurred near a private medical college in Durgapur, Paschim Bardhaman district. Within 36 hours of the incident, three individuals were arrested, while two other suspects remain absconding.

Taking to social media, Pradhan expressed deep anguish over the crime.  “The incident in Durgapur, West Bengal, involving a medical student from Odisha is despicable and painful. Have learnt that the survivor is receiving medical care. Pray for her earliest recovery. Such shameful incidents and crimes against women have no place in society,” he posted.

Pradhan also appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.

“I urge the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal to take strict action against the culprits and ensure justice is delivered swiftly,” he added.

The Durgapur Police Commissioner confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full sequence of events and identify any additional suspects. The identities of the arrested individuals have not yet been disclosed.

The incident has sparked outrage across Odisha and West Bengal, with calls for stronger measures to protect students and women from such heinous crimes.
