Cuttack/Sambalpur, Mar 18: A notorious hardcore criminal, Dhaneswar Jhankar alias Tima, was arrested after being shot in the leg during a police encounter in Dumchhali forest area under Rairakhol PS limits early Wednesday.
Acting on inputs about the presence of Tima and his associates in Dumchhali forest, a team was constituted and intensive search was launched.
During this, Naktideul Police traced Tima and his three associates. On seeing the police personnel, Time attempted to flee.
Tima opened fire on the police team in an attempt to flee. In self-defence, the police retaliated with controlled firing, during which the accused sustained a gunshot injury on his right leg and was nabbed.
According to police sources, Jhankar fired three rounds while the police responded with two rounds. During the operation, police seized one pistol with live ammunition, a Bolero vehicle, a wire cutter, and other tools used for cutting power transmission wires.
The injured accused was immediately shifted to the Sub-Divisional Hospital (SDH), Rairakhol, for medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that further investigation into the case is underway.

Jhankar, considered a notorious figure in Odisha’s criminal network, has a long history of involvement in dacoity, robbery, offences under the Arms Act, and theft of aluminium conductor wires.
His arrest marks a significant breakthrough in curbing organised crime in the region.
More than 41 criminal cases across various districts of Odisha is pending against the accused, said sources.
