Baliguda, Jan 20: An elephant death incident in Belghar Range has sparked controversy, leading to the suspension of Ranger Binay Kumar Bishi.
Allegations have surfaced that efforts were made to suppress the case instead of reporting it promptly.
Initially, officials had denied the allegations and claimed the reports were false. However, after visiting the spot and conducting a preliminary investigation, the Baliguda DFO confirmed that the incident was indeed true.
According to reports, the matter came to light only after 12 days when Baliguda Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Ghanshyam Mohant received information from the media and initiated an investigation.
The suspension of the ranger underscores the seriousness of the allegations, with officials stressing that concealment of wildlife deaths violates both departmental ethics and conservation norms.
According to sources, the elephant died in the Jhiripani area on January 5. In an alleged attempt to cover up the incident, some Forest Department personnel cut the carcass of the elephant into pieces and buried them elsewhere.
