Post-Diwali Air Turns Toxic In Delhi, AQI Dips To 368

Key Points

The Central Pollution Control Board recorded the Air Quality Index at RK Puram at a staggering 368, placing it firmly in the 'Very Poor' category.
New Delhi, Oct 21: The national capital woke up to a thick blanket of smog and hazardous air on Tuesday morning, following a night of widespread Diwali celebrations marked by fireworks.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) at RK Puram at a staggering 368, placing it firmly in the 'Very Poor' category.

In response to the deteriorating air quality, authorities have invoked Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a set of emergency measures designed to curb pollution levels during critical periods. GRAP-2 includes restrictions on construction and demolition activities, increased frequency of mechanized road sweeping, and intensified water sprinkling to control dust.

Commuters in the vicinity of INA and AIIMS reported reduced visibility and a noticeable dip in air freshness. Health experts have advised residents—especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions—to limit outdoor exposure and wear protective masks when stepping out.

The Delhi government and pollution control agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, urging citizens to contribute by avoiding vehicle idling, using public transport, and refraining from burning waste.

With winter approaching and pollution levels historically peaking during this season, the capital braces for further environmental challenges.
