Gariaband/Nabarangpur, Jan 20: In a significant breakthrough for anti-Maoist operations, nine hardcore Naxalites carrying a collective reward of Rs 45 lakh surrendered before the Gariaband police along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border.
The surrendered cadres, active in Sinapali and SDK area committees, handed over six sophisticated weapons including three AK-47 rifles, two SLRs, and one 303 rifle.
Officials confirmed that many of these arms had been looted from police personnel during past attacks.
Among the group was a senior divisional committee member, marking a major success for security forces. Baldev alias Bamanbhatti, influenced by an emotional appeal from his father on social media, chose to abandon violence and return to his family. His wife also surrendered alongside him.
Other surrendered cadres include Anju alias Kavita, Soni alias Budri, and Damru, each carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh. Authorities have begun extending rehabilitation benefits under government policy.
