Cyclone Ditwah Intensifies; Coastal Regions On High Alert

New Delhi, Nov 30: Cyclonic Storm Ditwah over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Sri Lanka–Tamil Nadu coasts has continued to move nearly northwards at a speed of 5 kmph during the past six hours.

 

According to the latest update, the storm was centered over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining North Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts, near latitude 10.7°N and longitude 80.6°E. Its position was recorded approximately:

- 90 km east-northeast of Vedaranniyam (India)

- 90 km east-southeast of Karaikal (India)

- 130 km north-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka)

- 160 km south-southeast of Puducherry (India)

- 260 km south of Chennai (India)

 

With system gaining the intensity, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure authorities at Chennai International Airport grounded around 54 flights.

 

On the other hand, IMD Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said that due to the cyclone's impact, sea winds around Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have reached 70 to 80 kilometres per hour, gusting to 90 km/hour.
