New Delhi, Jan 12: The United States is set to resume the next round of trade deal negotiations with India from January 12, with US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor describing India as the most essential partner for Washington.

Speaking at the US Embassy in New Delhi on Monday, Gor said no other country holds the same strategic importance for the United States as India. Gor, who also serves as the US Special Envoy to South and Central Asia, underlined the strength of ties between the two nations, saying the relationship is anchored at the highest political levels.

“The United States and India are bound, not just by shared interests but by a relationship anchored at the highest levels,” Gor said in his arrival address. “Real friends can disagree but always resolve their differences in the end.”

He acknowledged that concluding a trade agreement would not be easy, given India’s scale and economic complexity. “India is the world’s largest nation. So it’s not an easy task to get this across the finish line, but we are determined to get there,” he said.

Gor emphasised that while trade remains a key pillar of bilateral ties, cooperation between the two countries extends well beyond commerce. He cited close collaboration in areas such as security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education and health.

Referring to the rapport between the two leaders, Gor said he had witnessed the personal relationship between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi first-hand. “I have travelled all over the world with President Trump, and I can attest that his friendship with Prime Minister Modi is real,” he said.
