Bengaluru, Jan 12: Bengaluru police arrested an 18-year-old man for the murder of a 34-year-old software engineer, allegedly killing her after she resisted his sexual advances, investigators said on Monday.
The victim, identified as Sharmila DK, who worked with Accenture, was found dead in her rented house in Subramany Layout of Ramamurthy Nagar on January 3. Initial suspicion was that she had died of suffocation following a fire inside the apartment.
Police had first registered an Unnatural Death Report under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and launched a detailed investigation.
During the probe, officials said forensic analysis and technical evidence led them to an 18-year-old neighbour, identified as Karnal Kurai, who lived in the adjoining house. During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to the crime.
According to police, the accused entered the victim’s house around 9 pm on January 3 through a sliding window. He allegedly sought sexual favours, and when the woman resisted, he forcibly covered her mouth and nose, causing her to become semi-conscious. Police said she also sustained bleeding injuries during the struggle.
Investigators said the accused then attempted to destroy evidence by placing the victim’s clothes and other materials on a mattress and setting them on fire before fleeing the scene. He is also accused of stealing the victim’s mobile phone while escaping.
Based on the confession and supporting evidence, the accused has been booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 103(1) for murder, as well as provisions related to sexual offences and destruction of evidence.
