Student in London was forced to change schools

Key Points

  • An eight-year-old Hindu student in London was forced to change schools after being asked to justify wearing a Tilak-Chandlo, a sacred religious symbol.
  • The child was reportedly monitored, isolated, and removed from responsibilities — actions that, if proven, amount to direct religious discrimination under the Equality Act 2010.
  • Insight UK stated that at least four Hindu children have left Vicar’s Green Primary School, citing repeated dismissals of parents’ attempts to explain Hindu practices.
London, Jan 20: An eight-year-old Hindu student has been forced to change schools in London after allegedly facing discrimination for wearing a Tilak-Chandlo, a sacred religious symbol applied on the forehead.

According to Insight UK, an advocacy group representing the British Hindu and Indian community, staff at Vicar’s Green Primary School asked the child to justify his religious practice — a move the organisation described as “entirely inappropriate for a minor.”

It is further alleged that the headteacher monitored the child during break times in a manner that felt intimidating, causing him to withdraw from play and isolate himself from peers.

The student was also reportedly removed from positions of responsibility solely because of his religious observance. If proven, such actions would amount to direct religious discrimination under the Equality Act 2010, which protects religion as a characteristic.

“No child should feel watched, singled out, or isolated because of their faith,” an Insight UK spokesperson said, warning that such experiences could have lasting emotional impacts and raise safeguarding concerns.

Parents of the pupil, along with other Hindu families, claim repeated attempts to engage the school leadership were dismissed, reflecting an unwillingness to acknowledge Hindu practices. Insight UK further noted that at least four children have left the school due to similar experiences.
