Key Points
- Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman says a “power shift” and non-creative people having influence may have reduced his Hindi film work.
- He suggested in a BBC interview that communal factors might play an indirect role, conveyed as “Chinese whispers.”
- Industry figures cite budget, scheduling, and perception of his global commitments as possible reasons.
Mumbai, Jan 17: Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman’s recent remarks on his diminishing presence in the Hindi film industry have sparked wide discussion among filmmakers, musicians and industry insiders.
In an interview with the BBC Asian Network, Rahman reflected on why he has been composing less frequently for Hindi films in recent years. He suggested that changes within the industry may have played a role, though he said nothing was ever stated directly to him.
“Maybe in the past eight years, because a power shift has happened and people who are not creative have the power now,” Rahman said. “It might be a communal thing also, but it is not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers.”
Rahman added that he does not actively pursue work. “I am not in search of work. I want work to come to me. Whatever I deserve, I get,” he said, adding that the reduced workload has allowed him more time with his family.
Industry Responds
Rahman’s comments prompted varied reactions from within the Hindi film industry.
A music producer, speaking anonymously, said budget constraints often influence hiring decisions. “A mid-range director can either afford Rahman or a big star, not both. His fees and international tours also make scheduling difficult,” the producer said.
Veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar dismissed the suggestion of any communal bias, saying Rahman’s global commitments may shape perceptions. “People think he is very busy in the West and may not be available. I don’t see any communal angle,” Akhtar said.
Singer Shaan echoed that view, saying fluctuations in work are common. He said opportunities depend on suitability and creative alignment rather than personal background.
Author Shobhaa De termed Rahman’s suggestion “dangerous,” arguing that the Hindi film industry has traditionally functioned on talent rather than identity. Singer Hariharan described the issue as a “grey area,” saying multiple factors influence professional opportunities.
Recent Work
Rahman’s recent Hindi film projects include 'Chhaava' (2025) and 'Tere Ishk Mein', directed by Aanand L Rai, which performed well commercially. In 2024, he composed music for 'Maidaan' and 'Amar Singh Chamkila', while 'Pippa' and 'Animal' were released in 2023.
