Talcher, Jan 17: Panic prevailed briefly after residents spotted what appeared to be a human skull lying along the roadside near the Pabitra Mohan Pradhan Government Hospital at Ghantapada area in Talcher of Angul district, a source said on Saturday.
According to the source, the skull was found on the side of the main road passing close to the hospital, prompting locals to alert the police. Following the information, personnel from Colliery Police Station reached the spot and initiated an investigation.
Police officials said the origin of the skull and how it reached the roadside remain unclear at this stage. However, based on preliminary examination, investigators believe the skull is more than a month old. Officials stressed that this assessment is part of the initial inquiry and not a final conclusion.
Police also confirmed that a cremation ground is located near the spot where the skull was found. Based on this, officers said it is possible that the remains may have originated from a burial or cremation site in the vicinity.
