Cuttack, Nov 5: The historic Baliyatra festival, one of India’s largest open-air fairs, will commence from today in Cuttack, marking the start of a week-long celebration of Odisha’s rich maritime heritage and cultural vibrancy.
Held along the banks of the Mahanadi River, Baliyatra commemorates the ancient voyages of Odia traders (Sadhabas) who once sailed to Southeast Asia.
The festival blends tradition with modern attractions, draw lakhs of visitors from across the state and beyond every year.

The theme for 2025, “Cuttack in Cuttack – Celebrating Odia Language and Literature”, highlights the region’s literary legacy.
A special pavilion will showcase rare Odia manuscripts, books, and cultural exhibits. The festival also includes a massive book distribution drive, aiming to gift 1 lakh books to children across the state.
The district administration has introduced several new features to enhance the visitor experience. Highlights include an anamorphic 3D screen, interactive experience zones, electric drum performances, a vintage car exhibition, and the famed Tarakasi Gallery showcasing Cuttack’s silver filigree craft.
A 5D theater and thrilling water sports—boating, rowing, canoeing, and kayaking—will be available on the Mahanadi River, along with a three-day laser light show.
Security and crowd management have been ramped up, with thousands of personnel deployed to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
