T20 World Cup: Disciplined Australia hand 36-run defeat to England

Australia is at the top of Group B with two wins in two matches while England is at fourth place with a loss and a no-result game

Bridgetown (Barbados), June 9: Disciplined bowling from Australia in the second half of the innings after a fiery start by openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt helped the 2021 champions secure a 36 run win over England in their ICC T20 World Cup match at Bridgetown, Barbados Saturday.

Australia is at the top of Group B with two wins in two matches while England is at fourth place with a loss and a no-result game.

In the run-chase of 202 runs, the English opening pair of Jos Buttler and Phil Salt responded with almost the same aggression as Australia, keeping a run-rate of almost nine or ten per over during the powerplay. Both right-handers targetted pace quartet of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Marcus Stoinis with disdain, with Starc and Hazlewood going for 18 and 20 runs in their first two overs.

At the end of six overs of the powerplay, England was 54/0, with Buttler (21*) and Salt (29*) unbeaten. Australia reached the 50-run mark in 5.2 overs.

The seventh over by Starc proved to be expensive as he gave away 19 runs, including two sixes and a four by England's dominant opening pair.

However, in the next over, Adam Zampa's spin did its magic as Salt missed the ball completely and was cleaned up for 37 in 23 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes. England was 73/1 in 7.1 overs.

Zampa also ended Buttler's stay at the crease after being caught by Cummins at deep backward point while attempting a reverse sweep. The English skipper scored a fine 42 in 28 balls, with five fours and two sixes. England was 92/2 in 9.5 overs.

With Australia getting a big wicket of hard-hitting Will Jacks for just 10 in 10 balls, they had removed the top three of England's line-up. Stoinis got the wicket thanks to a brilliant catch from Starc. England was 96/3 in 10.5 overs. England reached the 100-run mark in 11.2 overs.

After a couple of slow overs, Moeen Ali broke the shackles by smashing Glenn Maxwell for three sixes. However the start of 15th over, Jonny Bairstow (7) gifted his wicket to Hazlewood with a slow-timed shot that was caught by Maxwell at deep-midwicket. Australia was 124/4 in 14.1 overs.

Pressure was piling up on the defending champions as they needed 76 in the final five overs. England had scored just 33 runs in between overs 10-15.

Cummins delivered a fine 16th over, getting the important wicket of Moeen for 25 in 15 balls, with three sixes. David Warner caught him near the boundary. England was 128/5 in 15.5 overs.

Livingstone broke a streak of boundary-less overs, smashing a huge straight six after 21 balls in 17.4 overs. England was left with 54 runs to get in the final two overs.

Livingstone lost his wicket while attempting a straight six against Cummins, getting out for 15 in 12 balls, with a six. England was 152/6 in 18.5 overs.

England could not chase down the total, ending their innings at 165/6, with Brook (20*) and Jordan (1*) unbeaten.

Cummins (2/23) and Zampa (2/28) were the top bowlers for Australia. Hazlewood and Stoinis got a wicket each.

Earlier, an explosive 70-run opening stand between openers Travis Head and David Warner helped Australia reach a competitive score of 201/7 in their 20 overs during the ICC T20 World Cup contest against arch-rivals England at Barbados on Saturday.

None of the Aussie batters could get a big score. However, nearly everyone chipped a solid amount of runs with a great run rate to make sure the 2021 champions reached a solid score.

After being put to bat first by England, Australian openers Travis Head and David Warner put the team to a fine start. The second over by Will Jacks saw Australia get 22 runs, with a six by Warner and two maximums by Travis.

Warner continued to bully English pacers into submission, this time bludgeoning Mark Wood's express pace for three big sixes and a four in the fourth over. With another 22 runs from the over, Australia touched the 50-run mark in just 3.4 overs.

Head and Warner smashed Moeen Ali's spin around the park, but the veteran spinner got the prized scalp of Warner for 39 runs in just 16 balls, with two fours and four sixes. Australia was 70/1 in five overs.

In the very next over, Jofra Archer deceived Head with his slower ball which crashed into his middle stump. The attacking opener was gone for 34 in 18 balls, with two fours and three sixes. Australia was 74/2 in 5.4 overs.

At the end of the powerplay in six overs, Australia was 74/2, with Glenn Maxwell and skipper Mitchell Marsh yet to score.

For the next four overs, Australia's run flow slowed down, though Marsh hit some fine boundaries. Australia reached the 100-run mark in 9.3 overs. Maxwell, battling a poor run of form, took his time to settle. At the end of 10 overs, Australia was 102/2, with Marsh (18*) and Maxwell (10*) unbeaten.

Australia's run-rate got some much-needed uptick after two lesser productive overs as Chris Jordan's 13th over was smashed for 18 runs, including two fours and a six. The duo of Marsh and Maxwell reached the 50-run partnership in 41 balls.

Liam Livingstone's part-time spin managed to end this 65-run partnership as skipper Marsh was stumped for 35 in 25 balls, with two fours and two sixes. Australia was 139/3 in 13.5 overs.

In the next over, spinner Adil Rashid got Maxwell's scalp, who could not find the desired elevation in his shot and handed a catch to Phil Salt at deep midwicket. Maxwell was gone for 28 in 25 balls, with three fours and a six. Australia was 141/4 in 14.2 overs.

At the end of 15 overs, Australia was 149/4, with Marcus Stoinis (8*) and Tim David (1*) unbeaten. Australia reached the 150-run mark in 15.1 overs. Tim's brief knock of 11 in eight balls was ended by Jordan, who got the assistance of Livingstone at deep extra-cover. Australia was 168/5 in 16.5 overs.

Matthew Wade was next up on the crease and he kept the run-rate nice with some clean hitting along with Stoinis. Australia reached the 200-run mark in 19.3 overs.

Jordan ended Stoinis' quickfire knock at 30 in 17 balls, with two fours and two sixes, with Harry Brook taking a fine catch. Australia was 200/5 in 19.4 overs. On the very next ball, Pat Cummins was run out for a duck. Australia was 200/6 in 19.5 overs.

Australia ended their innings at 201/7, with Matthew Wade (16*) and Mitchell Starc (1*) unbeaten. Jordan (2/44) was the pick of the bowlers for England. Rashid, Livingstone, Ali and Archer got a wicket each.

Bridgetown (Barbados), June 30: South Africa needed 30 runs off 30 balls to win the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. But Hardik Pandya’s 3-20 and Jasprit Bumrah’s 2-18 helped an unbeaten India to come back and clinch their second title in the shortest format with a seven-run win at the Kensington Oval on Saturday.

Talismanic batter Virat Kohli stepped up to end his lean run with a 59-ball 76 to help India post a competitive 176/7, the highest total in a Men’s T20 World Cup final. His 72-run stand for the fourth wicket with Axar Patel, who made 47 off 31 balls, and a 57-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who hit a 16-ball 27, helped India go past 175-run mark, as they got 42 runs off the last three overs.

In reply, South Africa were very much in sight to chase down the total. But Hardik taking out Heinrich Klaasen propelled India to come back into the match and emerge victorious to end a long 11-year global trophy drought as they restricted South Africa to 169/8.

India now join West Indies and England as two-time winners of the Men's T20 World Cup, and give a winning farewell to head coach Rahul Dravid. With the ultimate glory achieved, it made way for emotional scenes – hugs, handshakes and tears welling up in the Indian camp, with ‘chak de india’ and ‘lehra do’ blaring from the loudspeakers.

It also meant Virat Kohli signed off from playing T20Is for India on a high with the World Cup trophy and the Player of the Match award in the final. When it mattered the most for India, Kohli stood up to be the hero of India’s innings with his crucial knock laced with six fours and two sixes.

Kohli got India going with three boundaries – drive through point, whip through square leg, and straight drive – on overpitched deliveries from Marco Jansen, as 15 runs came off the opening over. Rohit Sharma got going with a cut and reverse-sweep fetching him consecutive deliveries off Keshav Maharaj.

But Maharaj bounced back as he had Rohit sweeping aerially to square leg to fall for nine, followed by dismissing Rishabh Pant for a two-ball duck when the top-edge on his sweep off a full and wide ball ballooned off the toe-end to keeper Quinton de Kock.

Kagiso Rabada struck in the fifth over when Suryakumar Yadav moved across to whip a back-of-a-length ball, but fine leg advanced to his left and took a spectacular catch to fall for just three, as India were reduced to 34/3 in 4.3 overs.

With Kohli taking up the busy strike rotation role in rebuilding India’s innings, pinch-hitter Axar took up attacking mantle by clipping Rabada for four, clearing deep mid-wicket to get a six off Markram, slog-sweeping Maharaj for a maximum over the same region and hitting a flat six down on one knee to just clear long-on for a six off Tabraiz Shamsi.

Axar brought up India’s hundred in 13.1 overs by hammering Rabada for a six down the ground. But a ball and wide later, South Africa produced a moment of magic when Kohli missed a delivery and the ball went behind to de Kock, who ran-out Axar, who turned back and ran slowly, with a direct hit and send him back for 47.

With Kohli still finding fielders and not getting timing to hit boundaries, Dube got in to loft Jansen for six and then slog-sweep Shamsi for four more. After Kohli got his first fifty of the tournament in 48 balls with a single off Nortje, Dube ended the 17th over with a slice past backward point for four.

Kohli got his first six of the competition by slogging Rabada over long-on for six and then pulled the pacer for four more, as 16 runs came off 18th over. Kohli clipped and slogged Jansen for four and six respectively, before the pacer dragged his length back and had the batter holing out to long-on.

Hardik Pandya came in and top-edged a pull off Jansen over keeper’s head for four, as 17 runs came off the 19th over. Dube struck Nortje down the ground past a diving mid-on for four, before the pacer bounced back by taking out him and Ravindra Jadeja on the last three balls of the innings to take India to a competitive total.

Player of the Tournament Bumrah gave India the perfect start to their defence of 177 by castling Reeza Hendricks with an outswinger in the second over. Arshdeep Singh struck in the next over as Aiden Markram chased a wide wobble-seam delivery and Pant dived to his right to complete the catch.

Quinton de Kock guided Bumrah in the gap between slip and short third man for four, before he and Tristan Stubbs took a boundary each off Axar Patel in the fifth over. De Kock ended the power-play with a four cut off Kuldeep Yadav as South Africa made 42/2 in the six-over phase.

Stubbs nailed his slog-sweep off Axar for four, before smashing an off-drive off Kuldeep for picking another boundary. De Kock brought up the half-century of his partnership with a booming slog-sweep off Kuldeep sailing over the solar-panelled stadium roof for six.

Stubbs stayed low to sweep a short ball from Axar for four, before moving across to sweep again off the spinner. But he missed the delivery and was bowled around his legs to be out for 31 as India broke the 58-run third-wicket stand in the ninth over.

Heinrich Klaasen began by slapping a short and wide ball from Hardik Pandya for six, before going on backfoot to club Ravindra Jadeja down the ground for another maximum. The shot of the innings came from Klaasen when he stood still and deep in the crease to loft Kuldeep over extra cover for six.

De Kock welcomed Arshdeep with a flicked four, but an attempt to pull resulted in the batter giving a catch to fine leg in the 13th over. Miller got into the act by cutting Kuldeep through four and rocking back at the crease to pull over mid-wicket for six.

Klaasen again stayed deep in the crease to whack Axar down the ground for four and followed it up with muscling consecutive leg-side sixes, before bringing out lofted drive over extra cover for another boundary as 24 runs came off the 15th over.

Klaasen got his fifty in 23 balls, but the turning point of the match came when he nicked behind to Pant while chasing a wide delivery from Pandya to fall for 52 off 27 deliveries. With pressure building in, Bumrah came to castle Jansen through the gate to end his day with 2-18.

After Arshdeep gave away four runs in the 19th over, the equation came down to 16 needed off the last over. Miller went for a loft off Hardik, but it came off the toe-end and Suryakumar, at long-off, ran to lob the ball in the air and came back on the field to take the catch and have him out for 17-ball 21. Hardik had Rabada holing out in the deep as India held their nerve to win the title and spark jubilant plus emotional scenes in Barbados and at home.

T20 WC final: Axar, Kohli's Spectacular Counterattacking Steer India To 176/7 Against South Africa

Bridgetown, June 29: Axar Patel's blistering 47 and Virat Kohli's astonishing 76 extricated India from an uncertain position to help the Men in Blue post 176/7 against South Africa in the final clash of the ongoing T20 World Cup at the Kensington Oval on Saturday.

The duo of Axar and Kohli helped India overcome a wobbly start after being reduced to 34/3 in the powerplay on a pitch that's on the slower side, while Shivam Dube played a lovely cameo of 27 runs off 16 balls. Meanwhile, India also posted the highest T20 World Cup total in the final's first innings.

In terms of bowling, Keshav Maharaj was the best bowler for SA, picking up 2/23 in his 3 overs while Nortje picked up 2/26 as well.

Virat Kohli ensured a strong start for India by running an onslaught in the opening over hammering Marco Jansen for two-back-to-back boundaries and gathering 15 runs in the first over.

Rohit Sharma started off Keshav Maharaj's over in a strong manner, however, India's super start was dented as the captain was caught while playing a sweep for 9 runs. In the same over, Maharaj piled on India's troubles by dismissing Rishabh Pant for a duck.

Maharaj looped up the delivery nicely on a fullish length and Pant took it to execute the sweep which ended up getting a top edge to the wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, who grabbed it successfully.

India lost a massive wicket as Suryakumar Yadav tried to pull a mistimed shot which was caught by Heinrich Klaasen, who ran in from the deep square leg and picked up a good catch by covering a decent amount of ground.

Axar Patel and Virat Kohli kept India steady after three quick wickets in the powerplay. Axar took the aggressive approach a couple of times, hitting one boundary and two sixes.

Kohli and Axar formed a vital partnership of 72 for the fourth wicket, but it was ended by a combination of poor running and exceptional fielding. De Kock picked up a gentle tap from Kohli and promptly threw it at the non-striker's end, where Axar was well out of his ground.

Coach Rahul Dravid's gamble to send No.5 Axar paid off as the all-rounder played a superb knock of 47 runs off just 31 balls, playing a main aggressor's knock in the partnership with Kohli as India rebuilt after three quick wickets in the powerplay.

With a six through the long on and then a boundary off a short ball against Rabada, Kohli slammed his first fifty of the tournament.
The man for the big occasion, Kohli, went on to play a composed knock till the penultimate over. After lifting his bat for his half-century in 48 deliveries, Kohli started to accelerate in the final three overs. He set the tone in the 18th over, by scoring a towering six on the first ball off Kagiso Rabada.

A quick double on the next delivery was followed by a classic pull shot to find the fence for four. He smoked the ball into the stand for a six and effortlessly found the fence for a four before walking back to the dugout with a score of 76(59) in the next over.
Nortje closed the innings out with a wicket but India managed to score 42 runs off the last 3 overs to end up with 176/7 on the board.
