Two More Drowning Incidents In Odisha: Search On For Missing Student, Body Of 14-Year-Old Recovered

Cuttack, Jun 4: Odisha witnessed two more drowning incidents on Thursday, with a student going missing in the Kathajodi River in Cuttack and a Class-IX girl losing her life in the Brahmani River in Jajpur district, once again drawing attention to the state's rising number of water-related deaths.

In the first incident, a group of four to five students had reportedly gone to the Kathajodi riverbank near Jaripada under Cuttack Sadar police station limits for a picnic. While bathing in the river, one of the students was swept away in deep water and went missing. The remaining students managed to escape safely, a source informed.

After receiving information, personnel from Fire Services department reached the spot and launched a search operation. Despite extensive searches at multiple locations in the river, the missing student could not be traced till the filing of this report. His identity was yet to be established officially.

Class-IX Student Drowns In Brahmani River
In a separate incident, a 14-year-old girl drowned while bathing in the Brahmani River near Chandanpur Ghat under Ramachandrapur police station limits in Bari area of Jajpur district.

The deceased was identified as Shubhalaxmi Biswal, daughter of Prashant Biswal from Chandanpur village and a Class-IX student.

According to the source, Shubhalaxmi had gone to the river along with two of her friends for a bath when she accidentally slipped into deep water and drowned.

Personnel from the Fire Services department rushed to the spot and recovered her body.

Odisha Continues To Witness High Drowning Fatalities
The two incidents come at a time when Odisha continues to report a worrying number of drowning deaths across rivers and coastal areas.

According to official data shared in the Odisha Assembly, 1,750 people lost their lives in river-drowning incidents and 82 others died in sea-related drowning cases between 2022 and 2025.

The data shows that Cuttack recorded the highest number of river-drowning deaths at 179, followed by Keonjhar with 160, Mayurbhanj with 154, Kendrapara with 110 and Sambalpur with 107.

In 2025 alone, as many as 427 people drowned across the state, underscoring the growing challenge of water safety and accident prevention.
