Bhubaneswar, Feb 18: The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety (SCCoRS) has taken serious note of the recent tragic road accident in Ganjam district that claimed five lives and left six others critically injured.

According to reports, on January 31, a truck travelling in the wrong direction on NH-16 near Haladiapadar rammed into three motorcycles in succession before colliding with a bridge. Four people died on the spot, while one more succumbed to injuries later during treatment.

In response, SCCoRS wrote to Odisha Chief Secretary Anu Garg on February 2, 2026, demanding a detailed investigation report. The committee has directed the state government to submit its findings by March 5, 2026. It has also emphasised the need for strict preventive measures to ensure such accidents do not recur.

The letter, signed by SCCoRS Joint Secretary R.K. Jain, specifically called for stronger enforcement of traffic rules, campaigns against reckless driving, and measures to curb wrong-side driving and overspeeding. The committee further asked the state government to outline future road safety initiatives and preventive strategies in its report.

Authorities have been urged to intensify road safety campaigns and adopt stricter monitoring to protect commuters and reduce fatalities on highways.
