Well-Marked Low-Pressure Area Intensifies Into Depression

Key Points

The system is expected to further intensify into a deep depression over the next 24 hours.
Bhubaneswar, October 25: A well-marked low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, raising concerns of a potential cyclonic storm named ‘Mutha’ forming in the coming days.

According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) latest bulletin, the system is expected to further intensify into a deep depression over the next 24 hours.

As of Saturday morning, the depression was centered approximately 1040 km south-southeast of Gopalpur and 990 km southeast of Visakhapatnam, said the weather department.

Meteorologists predict that the depression will evolve into a deep depression by October 26 and further intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 27 over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.

The impending cyclone is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal between October 27 and 30.

Authorities are closely monitoring the system’s trajectory, though its exact landfall location remains uncertain. Coastal districts have been advised to prepare for strong winds, rough seas, and potential flooding.
