13 Suspected Bangladeshis Shifted to Athagarh Sub-Jail as Crackdown Widens

Key Points

  • Odisha intensifies statewide action against suspected illegal Bangladeshi settlers.
  • 13 detainees from Jagatsinghpur shifted to Athagarh shelter home under police security.
  • Prime accused Sikandar Alam arrested; authorities continue verification and demolition actions.

Athgarh, Nov 23: In one of the most aggressive crackdowns since the new government assumed office in Odisha, authorities have intensified a state-wide drive to identify and remove illegal Bangladeshi settlers, with Jagatsinghpur emerging as a major focus after 13 suspected infiltrators were recently detained.

On Sunday, the 13 detainees – six men, five women and two children – were brought from Jagatsinghpur district to a central shelter home operating inside Athagarh Sub-Jail under tight police security. Officials confirmed that after due procedures, they will be handed over to Bangladesh authorities through the BSF.

This action follows a breakthrough in the ongoing investigation, with the arrest of prime accused Sikandar Alam from Jajpur district after a week-long search. Police said Alam fled from Jagatsinghpur district after the November 16 raid and moved across multiple districts, including Kendrapada, before being tracked down by surveillance on his secondary mobile phone, which remained active.

Alam is alleged to have encroached on government land in the Beheram slum under Tarikunda panchayat, where he reportedly built 10 asbestos houses and sheltered around 30 suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals. Police also said he had earlier worked in the merchant navy and may have maintained overseas connections. His car has been seized, and steps are underway to revoke his passport. Verification of identity documents of those detained is continuing.

The November 16 operation, led by Additional SP Satyabrat Dash, escalated when suspected illegal settlers allegedly attacked the police team, leaving three officers injured, including a woman constable. As many as 13 suspects were detained, while 10 others fled. Two women were later arrested on charges of sheltering illegal residents. A country-made revolver and 10 sharp weapons, including swords and machetes, were recovered from one of the houses.

On November 17, the administration demolished the 10 encroached structures in the presence of magistrates and senior officers. Authorities have indicated that the crackdown and document verification drives will continue across the district.
