Sikandar Alam Arrested After Week-Long Hunt In Bangladeshi Infiltration Case

Key Points

  • Sikandar Alam was arrested in Jajpur district after a week-long manhunt.
  • He allegedly built 10 illegal houses sheltering suspected Bangladeshi nationals.
  • Police seized documents, weapons and demolished the illegal structures.
Jagatsinghpur, Nov 22: Jagatsinghpur police on Saturday arrested the prime accused, Sikandar Alam, from Jajpur district after a week-long manhunt in the Bangladeshi infiltration case.

Police had laid traps at multiple locations, and Alam was finally detained along with his passport and several important documents, a source said. He is now being interrogated at an undisclosed location.

Police sources said Sikandar fled Jagatsinghpur and moved from Krishnanandapur to Tendakuda village in Kendrapada district before finally reaching Jajpur, where he was arrested. He was using two mobile phones -- one switched off and a small secondary handset that remained active. This active phone signal ultimately helped police trace and capture him.

Alam allegedly encroached on government land in Beheram slum under the Tarikunda panchayat and built 10 asbestos houses, where around 30 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were reportedly staying. Queries are also being raised over his alleged foreign links, as police said he earlier worked in the merchant navy and maintained contacts abroad.

Police had already seized his car and initiated the process to revoke his passport. A lookout notice was also planned, officials said. Verification of Aadhaar and other documents of the detainees is continuing, and raids may be conducted at locations suspected of facilitating fake Aadhaar issuance.

On November 16, a raid led by Additional SP Satyabrat Dash turned violent after suspected illegal settlers allegedly attacked the police team, injuring three officers, including a woman constable. Following the confrontation, 13 suspected infiltrators were detained, while two women were arrested for allegedly sheltering the illegal occupants. Ten suspects had fled during the raid.

Police later seized a country-made revolver and 10 sharp weapons, including swords and machetes, from one of the houses. On November 17, the administration demolished the 10 illegal structures in the presence of magistrates and senior officials.

During the inquiry, it was found that Alam allegedly housed a Bangladeshi national on encroached land for four years without detection.

Jagatsinghpur Collector J Sonal earlier had said that a special team had been formed to trace all suspects who fled after Sunday’s scuffle, while searches and document verification continue.
