Will Rain Play Spoilsport on Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra? Low Pressure Area Likely to Keep Puri Weather Unstable on July 16| Exclusive Details Inside

Key Points
Monsoon Instability: A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring persistent cloud cover and intermittent rain spells to Puri on July 16.
Operational Challenges: While heavy rain is not predicted, sudden convective showers and lightning pose potential risks to chariot movement and large-scale crowd management.
Devotee Advisory: Pilgrims are advised to carry rain protection, wear non-slip footwear, and remain hydrated to manage the high humidity levels expected during the festival.
Bhubaneswar: With Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra barely 52 hours away, preparations have reached the final stage to ensure that the world-famous chariot festival remains incident-free and offers nearly 17 lakh devotees congregating along the Grand Road a smooth and sacred darshan.
While the administration has intensified security, crowd management and logistical arrangements for the annual mega congregation, the biggest uncertainty this year could come from the skies.
With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting the persistence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the likelihood of active monsoon conditions, the question now being asked is whether rain will cast a shadow over the grand festival.
Puri Skies: Will Rain God Turn Up for Darshan?
A study of IMD-GFS, BFS , NCMRWF and ECMWF gives a clue.
The meteorological assessments indicate that Puri is unlikely to witness a complete washout on Rath Yatra day, but devotees should prepare for an overcast and unsettled weather pattern.
The upper air cyclonic circulation, extending between 4.5 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, is expected to sustain strong moisture incursion into coastal Odisha.
Combined with favourable southwesterly monsoon winds and the possibility of a low-pressure area developing over the northwest Bay, the synoptic conditions point towards
· Persistent cloud cover,
· Intermittent rain spells and
· Isolated thunderstorms on July 16.
Although rainfall may not be continuous throughout the day, sudden convective showers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph remain a distinct possibility.

✨The Feel Factor for 17 lakh Congregation
For the nearly 17 lakh devotees expected to assemble under the open sky, the weather could pose operational as well as physical challenges.
Dense cloud cover may keep daytime temperatures relatively moderate around 32-34 degrees Celsius, sparing devotees from intense sunshine.
However, the accompanying humidity – likely to remain above 80 per cent – could make conditions uncomfortable, particularly for pilgrims standing for long hours along the Grand Road.
The greater concern, however, is the possibility of sudden, high-intensity rain bursts, especially during after-noon hours, triggered by atmospheric instability associated with the Bay system.
Such short-duration but heavy showers can temporarily slow the chariot pulling process, create slippery road conditions, cause crowd congestion and reduce visibility.
Any thunderstorm activity would also require heightened vigilance as lightning poses a risk to large gatherings in open areas, even if the overall rainfall for the day remains moderate.
The Final Word
With weather emerging as an important factor in this year's Rath Yatra, the district administration is expected to maintain close coordination with the IMD's nowcasting unit for real-time weather updates throughout the day.
Emergency response teams, medical units, police and volunteers are likely to remain on alert to respond swiftly to any weather-related contingencies.
Devotees travelling to Puri are advised to carry rain protection such as umbrellas or lightweight raincoats, keep drinking water handy to avoid dehydration in the humid conditions, wear non-slip footwear and follow official advisories.
While
current forecasts do not indicate a complete rainout of the festival, the
prevailing active monsoon Low pattern suggests that devotees should be prepared
for a Rath Yatra marked by cloudy skies, intermittent showers and rapidly
changing weather.
